Circadian rhythms are of great importance for human physiology. Temporal variations in hormone levels, pharmacokinetics, and aspects of disease (e.g., the increased incidence of heart attacks in the early morning hours) reveal the important influence of the circadian clock on human physiology and pathophysiology. Jet lag, circadian-based sleep disorders and shift work are among the most prominent disorders of the human circadian system.
Extending our knowledge of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of circadian clock, one should be able to develop new treatment strategies for a wide range of clinical disorders.
